In the early 1980s, Bill Black (Who would later form AC Comics) did some new western covers for Charlton.

On the cover of Gunfighters #78 (April 1983), you can clearly see Bullseye alongside The Gunmaster, The Durango Kid, & some other guy. You can see it at: www.comics.org/coverdetails.lasso?id=132727&zoom=4

Charlton reprinted him in Gunfighters #85 (July 1984), the last issue of the title!

Bill Black did a cover article about him in 'Bill Black's Fun Comics' #3 (1982)!

I hope that it clears out his whereabouts!

By George, that is him, isn't it? And I can't identify that guy in front either. It's not one of the characters reprinted inside -- but then, none of them are. One would think they'd put The Masked Raider, the other Charlton western guy with a secret identity, there. But this guy's not even close.

Anbody know? (The link doesn't work for me, by the way. But it wasn't hard to find it at www.comics.org.)

And what's Durango doing there, anyway? He was a movie cowboy hero (with a secret identity), adapted to comics by Magazine Enterprises.

The guy in front was The Latigo Kid, a character created & owned by Bill Black. The Latigo Kid appeared in several covers of Gunfighters at that time! Near the end of their life span, Charlton did not attempt to own any new characters, so a lot of the new characters appearing in their few books that carried new material at the time (Mostly the 1980s 'Charlton Bullseye' & 'Scary Tales' #36 to #40!)were like the Latigo Kid in that they were owned by their creators. We already heard about Neil The Horse, Jack Bunny, & Thunder Bunny being part of this group. Other characters of this type are: Cap'n Catnip by Tim Fuller (A feline super-funny animal!), Larry Houston's The Vanguards (An all-girl superteam from 1981!), Charles Troug's Warhund (A barbarian), Bludd (Another barbarian), Gary Kato's Mr. Jigsaw (An oddball do-gooder), & The Dragon Force (The very last new superhero feature to come out of Charlton. This one is another supergroup!), as well as some non-series material!

I will fill you in on the Latigo Kid's AC exploits later!

The Latigo Kid, eh? Thanks. I wonder if the name was derived from Stan Lynde's similarly-named character.

Interesting that Charlton didn't claim ownership of any new characters toward the end. I knew about the '80s Charlton Bullseye (no relation to the guy under discussion, of course) material being creator-owned, but the other stuff is news to me. I guess it was apparent they were winding down, and maintaining intellectual property for future use would be a waste of energy.

That was a shame, since Cap'n Catnip, The Vanguards, Warhund, Bludd, & The Dragon Force never made another comic book appearance, as they are like Rapid Rabbit: one-shot stories that would have made for potential series! The Vanguards would have made for a great series (They debuted in 1981, three years before Femforce!).

The Market seems to have thought otherwise. (Or perhaps the reason they never went anywhere was because they were from Charlton. Cheap printing can only go so far in contributing to the longevity of a series.)

Charlton at that time (1981-83), was mostly putting out reprints of their earlier stuff!

That is why they had a low profile by then!
